We moved house! Into a home that is ours! 🏡 After a month away from Wellington and a 29-hour return journey, I arrived back just as all my belongings were being packed away and transported to a new house. Within a week, I was in a strange, new house, feeling a little lost at sea. I am swimming in excitement, bewilderment and discombobulation as I get used to this sudden, but wonderful, change of scene. A bit like a snowglobe all shaken up. I feel a bit like I’m in a stranger’s house, especially as we are surrounded by boxes and none of our familiar trinkets and photos and all the bits and bobs that make a house a home.
And so the unpacking begins, along with the painting, blind-ordering, exploring, hammering, and much-needed sleeping. Change is weird because, while it can happen suddenly and we can logically understand it, it seems to takes our bodies a little while to catch up and get used to the new surroundings, the new reality, whatever that may be. I’m going to go back to the old house before the next people move in and do a little goodbye ceremony – chatting about what we loved about the house, the memories it holds, bidding farewell to my beloved hydrangeas and the oak tree down the road. 🌳
Jacob’s parents were here during the move and his mum picked some lovely wild bouquets from our garden – they’re dotted around the house, bringing brightly coloured joy to each room. A good reminder: when everything is a bit chaotic, start with one little thing and go from there. 💐
