I came across this line in a book by Mark Nepo: “I can see that the things that matter are everywhere, like secrets hidden in the open.” It made me think of, amongst other things, the photos of bark I’ve taken recently. The textures and patterns of bark are like those a master carver may create. The mosses and lichens that call the bark home add beautiful formations and tones of colour, from greyish sea green to luminous, highlighter-green, and everything in between. Why is the bark a thing that matters? Because the bark was a portal to presence. Isn’t it the noticing of small beauties or, boiled down, a total attention to that which is right in front of us that connects us to the hum of life all around – not separate, but truly a part of? There are so many of those portals, and everyone’s have a different flavour. It’s hard to remember in our busy, rushed lives that we can open our eyes and step in whenever we want. 🌳

Lovely descriptions and thoughts on nature's portals - I saw some highlighter green lichen in North Wales recently and was reminded of your blog George 💚
